Activities & Wellbeing.

Activities & Wellbeing

Meaningful activities can help people living with dementia experience enjoyment, connection and a sense of purpose. From gardening and creative activities to music, gentle exercise and shared experiences, taking part in enjoyable activities can support confidence, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

Activities that reflect a person’s interests, abilities and life experiences can provide opportunities for enjoyment, creativity and self-expression. Familiar music, arts and crafts, gardening, gentle exercise and time outdoors can encourage participation, stimulate conversation and help people living with dementia remain connected to the world around them.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Meaningful Activities

Activities That Reflect Individual Interests

Activities That Bring Joy and Purpose

For some people, meaningful activities might include gardening, listening to favourite music, looking through photographs, painting, arts and crafts or sharing memories. Others may enjoy gentle exercise, nature walks, puzzles, storytelling or taking part in local community events. Activities should be flexible and adapted to individual abilities, preferences and energy levels. Allowing people to make choices, take breaks and participate at their own pace helps create positive experiences without unnecessary pressure. At Dementia Outreach CIC, we aim to encourage accessible, dementia-friendly activities that build on people's existing abilities, support independence where possible and create opportunities for enjoyment, confidence and personal fulfilment. Creating Opportunities for Connection and Wellbeing

Enjoyment, Connection and Belonging

Meaningful activities offer more than enjoyment. They provide opportunities to strengthen relationships, encourage communication, build confidence and create a sense of belonging. For people living with dementia, familiar and enjoyable experiences can support emotional wellbeing and help maintain a sense of identity and purpose. Social activities such as music sessions, gardening, arts and crafts, gentle exercise and community gatherings can encourage participation and shared experiences. Some people may prefer lively group activities, while others feel more comfortable in smaller gatherings or quieter environments. Activities should always respect individual preferences, abilities and personal choices. Families and unpaid carers also benefit from opportunities to share enjoyable experiences with their loved ones. Taking part in activities together can strengthen relationships, create positive memories and provide valuable opportunities for social connection. At Dementia Outreach CIC, we aim to promote welcoming, dementia-friendly environments where people can participate at their own pace, feel included and continue enjoying meaningful experiences within their communities across Hertfordshire.
